This is very common for Grade 3 students because vowel sounds are abstract concepts. Short and long vowels require different mouth positions and listening skills. Practice with familiar words daily and use visual cues like hand motions to help distinguish between the two types of sounds.
Start with very obvious examples like 'cat' (short a) versus 'cake' (long a). Have them watch your mouth as you exaggerate each sound. Practice one vowel at a time rather than mixing all five vowels together, and use rhyming games to develop their phonemic awareness.
Teach it as 'magic e' or 'bossy e' - explain that when e comes at the end of a word, it's usually silent but makes the vowel before it say its own name. Practice with word pairs like 'hop/hope' and 'mad/made' so they can see and hear the transformation in action.
Most Grade 3 students are still developing this skill. Short vowels in simple CVC words (like 'cat', 'bed', 'sit') should be fairly solid, while long vowels with silent e patterns may still need practice. Focus on accuracy over speed, and celebrate progress as they master each vowel sound.
This shows good decoding skills but indicates they need more practice identifying vowel sounds consciously. Have them slow down and really listen to the vowel sound they're making when they read each word aloud. Sometimes students read automatically without thinking about the individual sounds.
