This is common at the 3rd grade level. After reading, ask your child to retell the zoo story in their own words first, then go back to find specific details. Practice asking 'who, what, where, when' questions about the zoo visit to build comprehension skills gradually.

Use pictures, videos, or books about zoos to build background knowledge before reading. Help them connect to related experiences like visiting farms, pet stores, or seeing animals in books. The goal is building enough context so they can understand the story events and character experiences.
