Try the 'FANBOYS comma dance' - teach them that when they use For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So to join two complete sentences, they need to 'pause and comma' before the connecting word. Practice by having them physically pause and point where the comma goes.
A true compound sentence joins two complete thoughts that could stand alone. Test this by covering up everything after 'and' - if what's left makes sense by itself, and what comes after 'and' also makes sense alone, then you need a comma before 'and'.
If the sentence becomes hard to follow or sounds unnatural when read aloud, it's likely overloaded. A good rule is maximum two adjectives per noun (like 'the small, red car' not 'the tiny, small, bright red, shiny car'). Quality descriptions are better than quantity.
Teach the 'Goldilocks rule' for sentences - not too short, not too long, but just right. Short sentences are fine for emphasis, but they should also practice medium-length sentences (8-12 words) with one main idea plus some descriptive details.
For this level, focus mainly on periods for statements, question marks for questions, and exclamation points for excitement. In compound sentences, use periods at the very end. Save semicolons and other advanced punctuation for later grades - mastering these basics is the priority.
