This is common for G2 students! Try the 'puppet conversation' method - use two toys to act out the sentence. Ask 'Who is doing something?' (subject) then 'What are they doing?' (action). This visual approach helps children understand sentence structure naturally.
Teach them the 'voice test' - if their voice goes UP at the end when reading (like when asking 'Can I have a cookie?'), it needs a question mark. If their voice goes DOWN (like 'The dog is brown.'), it needs a period. Practice with familiar questions they ask daily.
Create a visual cue by having them put a star or dot before starting each sentence, then remind them 'the star means capital!' You can also use the analogy that sentences are like people - they always stand up tall and proud at the beginning.
Your child should be able to identify basic nouns and action words, understand that sentences express complete thoughts, and recognize capital letters versus lowercase letters. If they can tell you 'what happened' in a simple picture, they're ready for sentence building.
This shows good language development! Help them find the 'stopping points' by having them take a breath between complete thoughts. Ask 'Does this part tell us one thing that happened?' If they pack in too many ideas, praise their creativity and help them split it into two sentences.
