Medium level sight words for Grade 1 include words like 'have', 'they', 'where', 'been', and 'could' that are more complex than basic words like 'the' and 'and', but still appear frequently in early reading texts. They often have irregular spelling patterns that can't be easily sounded out.
Create a simple memory trick: 'Where' has 'here' inside it (w-HERE) and asks about places, while 'were' rhymes with 'her' and talks about the past. Practice with sentences like 'Where is my toy?' versus 'We were playing yesterday.'
Sight words should be memorized for instant recognition since many don't follow regular phonics rules. Practice them through repetition, games, and frequent exposure rather than sounding out. The goal is for your child to recognize them automatically within 3 seconds.
Your child should be able to instantly recognize basic sight words like 'the', 'and', 'is', 'to', and 'you' before moving to medium level. They should also be comfortable reading simple sentences with 3-4 words and have mastered most basic letter sounds.
Start by reading each sentence together and discussing what it means. Then read it again with each word choice to help your child hear which option makes sense. You can also act out the sentences or draw pictures to reinforce comprehension before focusing on word recognition.
