Sight words are specifically chosen because they don't follow regular phonics patterns (like 'the', 'was', 'said'). These words should be memorized as whole units. If your child can sound out a word using phonics rules they already know, encourage that instead.
This is very common in kindergarten. Practice pointing to each word while reading sentences slowly, then gradually increase speed. Also, cover other words in the sentence temporarily so they focus on recognizing just the sight word within context.
Most kindergarteners should master 20-50 sight words by the end of the year. Focus on the most common ones first (the, and, to, a, I, you, it, in, said, for). Your child should recognize these instantly - within 2-3 seconds - before adding more challenging words.
Medium difficulty includes using sight words in sentence context, distinguishing between similar-looking words, and working with 2-3 sight words per sentence. Easier practice focuses on just recognizing individual words in isolation or simple matching activities.
Allow them to finish the sentence first, as they might self-correct when the word doesn't make sense in context. If they don't self-correct, point to the misread word and ask 'Does that make sense?' This builds their comprehension monitoring skills along with sight word recognition.
