No. Grade 1 is a foundational year for spelling. Most children this age spell 50-70% of simple words correctly on first exposure. The goal is progress over time, not perfection immediately. If your child spells 5-7 words correctly, that's solid for Grade 1.
Review basic letter sounds separately before doing the spelling worksheet. Spend a few minutes daily with a letter-sound chart, playing games like 'I Spy' with sounds (e.g., 'I spy something that starts with /m/'). Once letter sounds are secure, spelling becomes much easier.
Invented spelling (like 'kt' for 'cat') is developmentally normal in early Grade 1. However, this worksheet assumes children know basic letter-sound relationships. If this happens frequently, focus on letter-sound practice before continuing with spelling worksheets. Out-of-order letters may indicate the child needs to slow down and say the word more deliberately.
1-2 times per week is ideal for Grade 1. More frequent worksheets can cause frustration without improving retention. The key is spacing: do this worksheet, then revisit similar words 2-3 days later, then again the following week. Spaced repetition is more effective than daily worksheets.
Focus on 2-3 of the most important or frequently-missed words rather than correcting all mistakes at once. For example, if your child missed 'the,' 'cat,' and 'sit,' practice just those three. Overwhelming correction leads to frustration and reduced confidence in early spellers.
