This is very normal for Grade 2! Students at this level often understand the rules but haven't yet developed the automatic habit of applying them while composing. Their brain is focusing on 'what to write' instead of 'how to write it.' Continue to gently remind them to check capitals and punctuation AFTER they finish writing. With repeated practice on worksheets like this one, the habit will become more automatic over time.
Start by asking questions that prompt describing words: 'What color is it?' 'Is it big or little?' 'How does it feel?' This guides them to naturally add adjectives. After they write a sentence, ask them to add one describing word to make it 'more interesting.' For example, change 'The cat is soft' to 'The soft gray cat is warm.' Practice this skill separately from correcting capitals and punctuation.
Focus on 1-2 skills at a time for Grade 2. If you're working on capitals and punctuation, let minor spelling errors slide for now. Celebrate what they did right ('You remembered the capital letter at the start!') before gently addressing one area for improvement. This builds confidence and prevents overwhelm.
Your student is ready to progress when they consistently use capital letters at the beginning of sentences, end most sentences with correct punctuation, and include at least one describing word per sentence with minimal reminders. Once they show these skills on 6-8 problems without errors, they're ready for more complex sentence-building activities like combining sentences or writing about sequences of events.

Writing complete sentences is a foundational skill that impacts all future writing. When Grade 2 students master capitals, punctuation, and basic sentence structure, they build confidence and develop a framework for organizing their thoughts. These skills make it much easier to write stories, descriptions, and explanations in later grades. It's like building the strong foundation of a house before adding walls and a roof!
