Practice identifying 'signal words' like 'because,' 'such as,' 'unlike,' and 'for example' that often introduce context clues. Have your child circle these words first, then look for the clue that follows.

Students ready for this level should be comfortable reading grade 4 texts independently and know most high-frequency words. They should be able to use basic context clues like examples and opposites in simple sentences.
Teach them to physically cover the answer choices first, make their own prediction, then uncover and test each option. This prevents them from settling on the first familiar-sounding answer.
Recognition vocabulary is much larger - students can understand 'enormous' in reading but might write 'big.' Focus on understanding context clues for recognition first, then gradually encourage using these richer vocabulary words in their own writing.
