Encourage them to look beyond just one sentence - context clues often appear in surrounding sentences or even the paragraph title. Also teach them to look for punctuation marks like commas, dashes, or parentheses that often set off definitions or explanations.
This is common at the sixth grade level as vocabulary becomes more abstract. Have them practice reading the entire passage first to get the main idea, then go back to focus on specific vocabulary words within that broader context.
Sixth graders are transitioning between elementary and more sophisticated vocabulary. Remind them that the correct definition should match the reading level and tone of the passage - if it's an informational text, look for more formal definitions; if it's narrative, more everyday meanings might fit.
At this level, students should master definition clues (word means...), example clues (such as, like, including), contrast clues (but, however, unlike), and cause-and-effect clues (because, since, therefore). These appear frequently in sixth grade texts across all subjects.
If they can consistently identify context clues in this worksheet and correctly match 12-13 out of 15 vocabulary words, they're ready for grade-level texts with more complex context clues or vocabulary that requires understanding of multiple meanings and figurative language.
