This is very common because multiplication can feel counterintuitive with decimals. When multiplying 2.5 × 3.4, students often forget that they need to count total decimal places in BOTH factors (one decimal place in 2.5 and one in 3.4 = two decimal places total). Teach them to multiply ignoring decimals first (25 × 34 = 850), then count decimal places in the factors and place the decimal that many places from the right (8.50). Have them practice this with concrete steps written out until it becomes automatic.
Use estimation as a verification tool. Before solving, have them round each decimal to the nearest whole number and solve that simpler problem mentally. For example, if solving 4.7 + 5.8, they estimate 5 + 6 = 11, so the answer should be close to 11. If they get 10.5, it's clearly wrong. This strategy helps them catch decimal placement errors (like getting 0.105 instead of 10.5) and builds number sense, which is essential for hard-difficulty problems.
The 'move the decimal' method is most accessible for Grade 5 students. Teach it as a three-step process: (1) Count how many decimal places are in the divisor. (2) Move the decimal in both the divisor and dividend that many places to the right. (3) Now divide as you normally would with whole numbers. For example, 12.6 ÷ 0.3 becomes 126 ÷ 3 = 42. Use place-value grids or number lines to show visually that moving decimals in both numbers doesn't change the relationship—you're creating an equivalent division problem that's easier to solve.

Break multi-step problems into explicit sub-steps by having them circle or box each operation and number pairing. For example, in a problem like '3.5 + 2.1 × 2,' have them write out: Step 1: Multiply 2.1 × 2 = 4.2, Step 2: Add 3.5 + 4.2 = 7.7. This reduces cognitive load and helps them track which numbers belong to which operation. Also, encourage them to write intermediate answers clearly so they don't lose track of partial results.
Decimal fluency at this level is foundational for middle school math, science, and real-world problem-solving. Students need to confidently work with decimals to succeed with fractions, percentages, ratios, and eventually algebra. Additionally, hard-difficulty problems—those requiring multiple steps or careful place value management—develop perseverance and mathematical reasoning beyond procedural calculation.
