The decimal point's position reflects the place value of our answer. When multiplying 0.3 × 2, we're really multiplying 3 tenths by 2, which gives us 6 tenths (0.6). In division, the decimal point stays in the same relative position to show what size groups we're creating. Understanding this connection between decimal placement and actual value—not just memorizing rules—helps students truly comprehend decimals.
Encourage them to use estimation as their checking strategy. Before solving the problem formally, ask them to round the numbers and estimate the answer size. For example, before solving 2.4 × 3, estimate: 2 × 3 = 6, so the answer should be a little more than 6 (which is 7.2). This makes it obvious if they've written 72 by accident. With practice, this habit becomes automatic.
It's generally easier to start with multiplication, as it connects naturally to the repeated addition students already understand. Once multiplication is solid, division becomes more manageable because students can check their division answer by multiplying back. However, if your student shows strong readiness, introducing both together using the inverse relationship (division as the opposite of multiplication) can deepen understanding.
Ask them questions like 'Why does 0.5 × 4 equal 2 and not 0.20?' or 'If you have $1.50 and divide it equally among 3 friends, how much does each friend get?' If they can explain their thinking using real-world contexts or visual models, they understand the concept. If they can only follow steps, spend more time with concrete examples and place value review before advancing.

Go back and strengthen place value understanding with decimals. Have them practice identifying and comparing decimals (e.g., which is larger: 0.4 or 0.04?) and converting between fractions and decimals (0.5 = 1/2, 0.25 = 1/4). Many G5 students find decimals easier when they understand the fraction connection. Once place value is solid, the multiplication and division procedures will make much more sense.
