Yes, this is very common! Division is the reverse of multiplication, which makes it more challenging. Help your child see the connection by practicing fact families together - if 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3.
At this introductory level, focus on understanding the concept first through hands-on activities and visual representations. Memorization of basic division facts (÷2, ÷5, ÷10) can come gradually as they build confidence with the process.
Both involve division but think about it differently. 'Groups of' means you know the size of each group (12 stickers in groups of 3 = how many groups?). 'Shared equally' means you know the number of groups (12 stickers shared among 3 friends = how many each?).
Start with the ÷ symbol since it's more commonly used in elementary textbooks. The forward slash (/) can be introduced later. Focus on helping them understand that both symbols mean 'divided by' regardless of which one is used.
