Long division requires multiple skills working together: knowing division facts, place value understanding, subtraction accuracy, and following a multi-step procedure. Practice each component separately, then combine them gradually.
At this level, remainders should be written as 'R' followed by the number (like 47 R3). Make sure they understand the remainder must always be smaller than the divisor, and teach them to check by multiplying back.
Start by having them estimate using rounding - if dividing by 23, think of it as 20. This gives a ballpark for how many times it goes in. Then adjust up or down as needed. Estimation prevents wild guesses.
Teach them to estimate first: 4,850 ÷ 25 is about 5,000 ÷ 25 = 200. If their answer is 19 or 1,940, they'll know something went wrong. Estimation catches most place value errors.
Practice the subtraction separately first, focusing on borrowing with zeros. In long division, have them double-check each subtraction step before moving on. Consider using graph paper to keep columns aligned.
