This is extremely common because students are learning that denominators represent the number of equal parts. They mistakenly think that if 1/3 + 1/3, the denominator should change because they're combining. Reinforce that the denominator describes how many equal parts make up the whole—this doesn't change when you add the same fractional pieces. Use the same manipulative divided into thirds repeatedly, physically combining pieces, so they see the denominator stays constant.
Have them draw both fractions using identical whole shapes (two circles or two rectangles of the same size). Shade in the fractional amounts and compare visually. For example, shade 1/2 of one circle and 1/3 of another identical circle side by side. The visual comparison builds intuition about size relationships. As they practice, they'll develop mental models that lead to fewer errors than memorized comparison strategies.
Thirds are conceptually harder because they're less intuitive than halves and fourths in everyday life. Spend extra time with concrete thirds using folded paper, strings divided into three sections, or actual objects split into thirds (like dividing three crackers equally among three people). Once they manipulate thirds physically multiple times, abstract problems with thirds become easier. Don't rush to move forward until thirds feel concrete.
They should confidently identify unit fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4) in pictures, recognize that 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent, and add simple fractions with the same denominator. If they're still shaky on these foundations, use easier fraction worksheets first. Hard fraction problems assume solid understanding of these basics and add complexity through unlike denominators, multi-step problems, or comparing non-unit fractions.

Not typically, and not on most Grade 3 hard fraction worksheets. Simplification (like reducing 2/4 to 1/2) is usually a Grade 4-5 skill. However, recognizing equivalence through models (showing 2/4 and 1/2 are the same amount) is appropriate for advanced Grade 3 students. Focus on understanding first; simplification rules come later. If your worksheet includes equivalent fractions, use area models or number lines rather than teaching a formal simplification algorithm.
