This is very common at this grade level. When numerators are the same, students need to think about the denominator differently—a larger denominator means the whole is cut into MORE pieces, so each piece is SMALLER. Try using actual objects: give your child 2 cookies from a plate of 3 cookies, then 2 cookies from a plate of 4 cookies. Physically comparing shows that 2/3 is larger because you're taking more from the smaller group. Drawing models side-by-side also helps them see this visually.
This shows they understand fractions conceptually but haven't internalized the notation yet. The solution is to have them draw their own models before attempting to solve. Even simple sketches or circles divided into parts helps bridge the gap between concrete (pictures provided) and abstract (numbers only) thinking. Gradually encourage them to move away from detailed drawings to quicker sketches, and eventually to solving with just the numbers—but let them draw when needed without penalty.
Grade 4 typically focuses on fractions with like denominators (same bottom numbers) for addition and subtraction. Working with unlike denominators is usually a Grade 5 skill. If your child's curriculum includes unlike denominators, it's okay to introduce the concept by finding common denominators visually (using models to show equivalent fractions), but formal algorithm-based solving can wait until they're ready.

Ask them to explain their work without looking at the visual model and have them create their own visual representations for given fractions. True understanding means they can explain WHY 3/4 is the answer, not just state it. Listen for language like 'three out of four equal parts' and watch for flexibility—can they solve the same problem in multiple ways (drawing, number lines, area models)? Students who only memorize tend to get stuck when the problem format changes slightly.
