This is completely developmentally appropriate for Grade 2. At this level, understanding what multiplication means is more important than memorization. Students should be building conceptual understanding through concrete strategies like drawing equal groups, skip counting, and using manipulatives. Automaticity with basic facts typically develops naturally over Grade 2 and into Grade 3 with consistent practice. Celebrate their use of strategies as evidence of mathematical thinking.
This is a very common confusion at this age. The key is to emphasize 'groups of' language. Say, '3 × 4 means 3 groups of 4,' then physically show or draw three separate groups with 4 items each. Count them all: 4, 8, 12. Then compare to addition: '3 + 4 = 7 means putting these two numbers together,' which gives a different answer. Repetition with concrete models will help your student internalize the difference.
At the Grade 2 medium difficulty level, the focus should be on understanding multiplication through strategies and repeated practice with problems, not forced memorization. Regular exposure to the same facts (especially 2s, 5s, and 10s) through this worksheet and similar activities will naturally build memory. Celebrate recall when it happens, but don't pressure memorization—understanding now leads to efficient recall later.
Use everyday contexts your child experiences. While baking, say, 'We're making 2 batches with 3 cookies each—that's 2 × 3.' During snack time: '4 friends each get 2 crackers—that's 4 × 2.' When setting the table: '3 plates with 2 napkins each.' These real-world connections make multiplication meaningful and help students see why multiplication matters beyond the worksheet.

If your student solves problems correctly and quickly, deepen the learning rather than moving to harder facts. Ask, 'Can you show me how you solved that using a drawing?' or 'What other multiplication fact do you notice?' (introducing the commutative property: if 3 × 4 = 12, then 4 × 3 = 12). You can also create word problems together using the numbers from the worksheet, which extends thinking without requiring a different worksheet.
