At this expert level, students are managing multiple steps simultaneously: recalling facts, multiplying, regrouping, and tracking place value. Mistakes often happen due to cognitive overload, not lack of understanding. Help by: (1) using graph paper for alignment, (2) encouraging students to write out partial products separately before adding them, and (3) having them check their work by estimating (e.g., 23 × 14 is close to 20 × 15 = 300, so the answer should be around 320). Slowing down intentionally often speeds up accuracy.
Master this worksheet's skill level (2-digit × 2-digit with fluency and accuracy) first. A good benchmark is solving 5-8 problems correctly with shown work in a single session. Once multiplication by two-digit numbers feels automatic and they're using strategies flexibly, three-digit multiplication becomes a natural extension. Rushing ahead without mastery creates frustration and requires reteaching.
Both! The standard algorithm is most efficient for these expert-level problems, but area models and arrays build conceptual understanding of why the algorithm works. Start with visual models (draw a rectangle split into sections), then transition to the standard algorithm, and finally have students solve using both methods to prove they get the same answer. This develops flexible thinking that experts use.
This is common—the jump from single-digit to multi-digit multiplication feels overwhelming. Build confidence by working backward: start with problems showing partial work already done (they just finish the addition step), then gradually show less work as confidence grows. Also, celebrate the process ('I love how you broke 24 × 13 into 24 × 10 and 24 × 3!') rather than just correct answers to normalize the effort required at this expert level.

Your student should consistently solve single-digit multiplication facts (up to 9 × 9) quickly and accurately, understand place value (tens and ones), and successfully solve two-digit × one-digit problems (like 23 × 4). If any of these skills are shaky, spend 1-2 weeks reinforcing them before tackling this expert worksheet. Attempting this level too early leads to frustration; attempting it when ready leads to breakthrough learning.
