Two-digit multiplication requires students to hold multiple concepts in mind at once: place value (understanding tens and ones), single-digit fact fluency, and regrouping (carrying). Unlike single-digit problems, two-digit multiplication demands executing multiple steps in the correct order. Students must multiply, manage place value carefully, and add partial products correctly. This cognitive load makes it one of the more challenging multiplication skills at Grade 3.
Understanding is more important at Grade 3. Students who memorize steps without understanding often make mistakes and can't fix them. Help your student visualize WHY 24 × 3 = (20 × 3) + (4 × 3) using base-ten blocks, area models, or drawings. Once the logic is clear, the steps become a useful shortcut rather than meaningless rules to follow.
This is a very common mistake. Make the carried number visible by having your student write it in a different color or very large above the tens place. Create a physical routine: say 'multiply, write, carry' aloud for each step. Some students benefit from circling or boxing the carried number to remind themselves it exists. Practice 3-4 problems slowly, focusing only on correct carrying before moving faster.

Your student should be ready if they can: (1) quickly recall single-digit multiplication facts (0-9), (2) understand place value and how to decompose numbers into tens and ones, and (3) add two-digit numbers with regrouping.
