Knowing single-digit facts (7 × 8) is necessary but not sufficient for two-digit multiplication. Your student must also understand place value deeply and manage the regrouping process. Many students rush through problems without organizing their work. Slow down and use the 'break apart' method consistently until they're comfortable, even if it feels tedious. Speed comes after understanding is solid.
Both are valuable! The area model (drawing rectangles divided into sections) builds deep conceptual understanding of the distributive property and why multiplication works. The traditional algorithm is faster once mastered. Grade 3 is the right time to teach both methods and let your student choose which feels most comfortable. Many students benefit from starting with area models, then transitioning to the algorithm.
Teach them to use estimation first: round the two-digit number to the nearest ten and multiply. If their exact answer is close to the estimate, it's likely correct. You can also use the inverse operation: if 24 × 3 = 72, then 72 ÷ 3 should equal 24. Having them verify this way reinforces both multiplication and division skills.
The most frequent error is forgetting to regroup or misplacing regrouped tens. For example, solving 24 × 3, they'll multiply 4 × 3 = 12, write down the 2 and carry the 1, but then forget to add that 1 when multiplying the tens place, getting 62 instead of 72. Use visual tracking (writing the carried number in a different color or circling it) to prevent this. When errors occur, ask them to 'break apart' the problem to find where the mistake happened.

Most Grade 3 students need 10-15 problems per session, practiced 3-4 times per week for 2-3 weeks to develop fluency. This worksheet of 10 problems is ideal for one practice session. Don't expect mastery immediately. Distribute practice over time rather than cramming. Once they can solve these problems with accuracy and explain their thinking, they're ready to move toward three-digit multiplication.
