This is a common challenge because 2-digit multiplication requires holding multiple steps in working memory while managing place value. When multiplying 24 × 13, your child must multiply 24 by 3, then 24 by 10, track regrouping in each step, and add two partial products together. The cognitive load is much heavier. Break it into smaller chunks: first practice just the multiplication part (24 × 3, then 24 × 10 separately), then practice adding the partial products as a separate skill before combining them.
Both are valuable, but for different reasons. The partial products method (breaking numbers apart and multiplying each part separately) builds strong place value understanding and helps students see WHY multiplication works. The standard algorithm (stacking numbers and multiplying right to left) is faster once mastered. A strong learner should understand both—starting with partial products for comprehension, then moving to the standard algorithm for efficiency. Some students need to use partial products as their primary strategy longer.
The regrouping step is genuinely tricky because your child must hold the 'carried' number in mind while also performing the next multiplication. Try these strategies: (1) Write the carried number smaller and in a different color above the problem so it's visually distinct, (2) Have them say aloud 'I'm carrying 2' before multiplying the next digit, (3) Use lined paper turned sideways to keep columns aligned, making it less likely that regrouped numbers get lost.

Teach estimation: Round both factors to the nearest ten and multiply quickly. For example, 24 × 18 becomes 20 × 20 = 400, so the answer should be close to 400. This gives your child a 'sanity check' and builds number sense. If they got 432, that's reasonable. If they got 5,200, they'd catch the error. This strategy is especially powerful for catching place value mistakes in the final answer.
Normalize struggle at this level—multiplication of multi-digit numbers is genuinely challenging and is meant to stretch 4th graders. Celebrate effort and strategy use, not just correct answers. Say things like 'I notice you remembered to add your partial products—that's the tricky part!' instead of only praising correct answers. Break the worksheet into smaller chunks (maybe 2-3 problems per day) rather than doing all 10 at once. Success with smaller batches builds confidence for tackling harder problems.
