When you multiply by the tens digit, you're really multiplying by 10 times that digit. The shift represents that multiplication by 10, which moves each digit one place value to the left. For example, multiplying by 20 means the result should be 10 times larger, so we shift it one position to show that it's actually in the tens place.
This usually means they're making inconsistent errors in regrouping or adding partial products. Have them use graph paper to write one digit per square, which prevents misalignment. Then have them solve the same problem twice more without erasing—if answers differ, work through together with a pencil to identify where the mistake happens. Consistent practice with correct form reduces this issue.
Use an area model or base-10 blocks first. For example, 23 × 15 can be drawn as a rectangle split into four boxes: 20×10, 20×5, 3×10, and 3×5. This shows why you multiply each digit and why you shift. Once they see the visual, connect it to the algorithm steps—they'll understand they're really breaking the problem into manageable pieces.
For Grade 4, mastery of the standard algorithm is important for grade-level expectations and future math success. However, alternative methods like partial products (written out in expanded form) or area models are excellent scaffolds to build understanding first. Use these as stepping stones, then gradually guide them toward the efficient standard algorithm format.

Start with 2-digit × 1-digit problems to build confidence, then progress to 3-digit × 1-digit, then 2-digit × 2-digit. Have them complete 2-3 problems daily with error analysis rather than rushing through many problems. After each problem, discuss what went well and what to watch for next time. Consistent, focused practice beats high volume practice.
