Two-digit multiplication requires students to hold multiple steps in their working memory while also managing place value. It's not just about knowing facts—it's about understanding that 24 × 3 means multiplying both the 20 AND the 3 by 3, then combining. Use visual models like area rectangles or base-ten blocks to make the 'parts' visible. Breaking numbers apart (24 = 20 + 4) before multiplying helps many students understand what's actually happening.
At Grade 4 medium difficulty, students benefit from learning multiple strategies simultaneously. Start with concrete models (arrays, area models) so they see WHY multiplication works, then introduce the partial products method (multiplying tens and ones separately), and finally introduce the standard algorithm. This progression builds understanding rather than rote memorization. Students who understand the 'why' make fewer errors.
Your student is showing that they understand the concept but haven't yet internalized the abstract process. This is completely normal for Grade 4. Continue allowing drawings or diagrams on practice worksheets, but gradually reduce their use. Use 'think aloud' strategies where you verbally describe the steps as if drawing invisible pictures. The bridge from concrete to abstract takes time—patience and repeated exposure are key.
Regrouping errors are one of the most common mistakes at this level. Practice the concept in isolation first using addition (where regrouping is often easier to visualize), then apply it to multiplication. Use the phrase 'make a ten/make a group' to reinforce what regrouping means. For example, in 27 × 3, when you multiply 7 × 3 = 21, say 'That's 2 tens and 1 one, so we write 1 and carry the 2 tens.' Color-coding columns (tens in one color, ones in another) also helps prevent careless mistakes.

Speed without accuracy is not the goal at Grade 4. Slow down and focus on understanding. Have them redo incorrect problems using a different strategy or with visual support. Then explore problems with larger numbers (like 35 × 4) or introduce multiplying two-digit by two-digit numbers as an extension. The goal is solid, flexible understanding of multiplication, not racing through worksheets.
