Showing steps builds number sense and mathematical reasoning—crucial foundations for more advanced math. When students write out partial products, they understand why multiplication works and how place value matters. This deep understanding helps them solve more complex problems later and recognize when answers are unreasonable. For Grade 5, the goal is fluency with understanding, not just getting correct answers.
All three methods work, and using multiple approaches strengthens understanding. For Grade 5 students at an easy difficulty level, partial products (writing out what you multiply tens and ones separately) is often most intuitive. The area model (drawing rectangles) helps visualize place value. The standard algorithm is efficient once concepts are solid. Start with the method your student understands best, then introduce others to deepen flexibility.
This is very common! Make it a checklist habit: after writing each partial product, your student should draw a line underneath and write '+' before calculating the final sum. Some teachers use a different color pen for this final addition step to make it visually distinct. You can also have your student circle the addition problem at the end before solving, treating it as a separate step they can't skip.
Ask your child to explain what's happening using place value language: 'Why do we write that number further to the left?' or 'What does this partial product represent?' Also try word problems where they must decide whether to multiply and recognize unreasonable answers. A student who understands will catch mistakes and can adapt strategies if one method gets confusing, while one who just memorized steps will struggle when questions look different.

Ideally, yes. Strong fluency with single-digit facts (times tables 0-9) makes two-digit multiplication much smoother since they won't get bogged down calculating basic facts. However, students don't need perfect mastery—they can reference a times table chart while practicing two-digit problems. Use this worksheet as motivation to strengthen remaining fact gaps, focusing on the facts your child finds most challenging.
