This is very common! Have your child write the regrouped amount above the next column in small numbers and circle it. For example, if multiplying 7 × 8 = 56, they should write a small '5' above the tens place before moving to the next column. Using different colored pencils to write regrouped numbers can make them stand out. Practice with smaller numbers first (2-digit × 1-digit) until the regrouping process becomes automatic before moving to larger problems.
When multiplying by the tens digit, we're actually multiplying by a number that represents tens (like 20, 30, or 40). To show this place-value difference, we shift the partial product one place to the left (or add a zero to the right). This prevents mixing up which partial product came from which digit. For example, 234 × 23 means we multiply by 3 (ones) to get one partial product, then multiply by 20 (two tens) to get another partial product that is already 10 times larger.
Encourage your child to use estimation and reasonableness checks first. Ask: 'Is this answer close to your estimate?' If not, have them redo the problem independently. You can also teach them to multiply in reverse order (multiply the smaller number first instead of second) to see if they get the same answer. Another strategy is to have them break the problem into smaller partial products and add them a different way. These strategies build independence and metacognitive awareness.

Graph paper is your best friend! Each digit goes in its own box, making alignment nearly impossible to mess up. Alternatively, use a vertical multiplication template that you create with clearly labeled columns for each place value. Some students benefit from using a ruler to keep rows straight.
