This is developmentally normal. Repeating patterns are concrete and cyclic—students can see the same unit repeat. Growing patterns require abstract thinking because the rule changes each step (like adding 1 more each time). At hard difficulty, this worksheet emphasizes growing patterns intentionally to push advanced learners. Help your student by making the growth visible: write out the numbers, circle the change, and ask 'What's different?' rather than 'What comes next?' This shifts focus from guessing to analyzing.
Ask them to explain the pattern rule in their own words or predict what comes 2-3 steps further. If they can only give the very next item but can't extend it further, they may be pattern-matching rather than understanding the rule. A true understanding shows up when they can say something like 'It goes up by 3 each time' or 'The color repeats every 4 shapes.' This worksheet's difficulty level aims for that deeper understanding.
Expect a mix: some repeating patterns with 3-5 repeating units (harder to track than 2-unit patterns), growing number sequences (like 2, 5, 8, 11...), patterns that combine shape and number changes, and potentially patterns where the rule itself changes (like doubling, then adding). This variety challenges Grade 3 students to be flexible thinkers rather than pattern-followers.
