Percentages are a special way of writing fractions where the whole is always divided into 100 parts. While 1/4 and 25% represent the same amount, percentages remove the need to simplify or find common denominators. At G5, the key is showing your child that 25% = 25/100 = 1/4. Once they see percentages as 'fractions out of 100,' it clicks. Use a 10×10 grid (100 squares) to shade in different percentages—this visual makes the connection concrete.
Focus on benchmark percentages and division strategies instead. For example, to find 25% of 20, ask: 'What is 1/4 of 20?' (Divide by 4 to get 5.) For 50%, ask: 'What is half of 20?' (Divide by 2 to get 10.) For 10%, ask: 'What is 1/10 of 20?' (Divide by 10 to get 2.) This approach builds strong mental math skills and avoids the need for decimal multiplication at this stage.
Percentages greater than 100% (like 150% or 200%) represent situations where you have more than the whole amount. For example, if a plant grew 150% of its original height, it grew to 1.5 times its starting height. At the 'easy' difficulty level, if percentages over 100% appear, they're typically introduced with visual support or contexts to help students see that the whole can be exceeded. If this feels advanced for your student, it's fine to focus on 0–100% first.
Use benchmark percentages as a reasonableness check. If finding 30% of 50, your child should get a number between 25% of 50 (which is 12.5) and 50% of 50 (which is 25). So 15 would be reasonable. Also ask your student: 'Is your answer smaller or larger than half the whole? Does that make sense for this percentage?' This comparison strategy helps them catch errors without redoing the entire calculation.

For 10 easy-level percentage problems, plan for 15–25 minutes depending on your child's pace and confidence. This includes review of benchmark percentages, working through a few problems together, and independent work. Don't rush through it—the goal is understanding and building confidence with percentages, not just finishing the worksheet. If your child needs more time or shows frustration, break it into two shorter sessions (5 problems each).
