First, verify they correctly identified the scale factor (desired servings ÷ original servings). Second, if using cross-multiplication, check their arithmetic—students often make multiplication or division errors. Third, ensure they're applying the same scale factor to all ingredients; inconsistent factors indicate they're treating different ratios separately rather than as one unified proportion. Have them explain their work aloud to catch these errors.
Both methods work! Cross-multiplication (setting up a proportion and solving) is more formal and helps students understand the underlying relationship. Multiplying by the scale factor is faster once they understand why it works. At the 'hard' difficulty level, students should be comfortable with both methods. Cross-multiplication is especially useful when the scaling factor isn't a whole number (e.g., scaling to 1.5 times the recipe).
A ratio is a comparison of two quantities (like 2 cups flour to 1 cup sugar). A proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal (like 2:1 = 4:2). In recipe scaling, you're using proportions because you're saying 'the ratio of flour to servings in the original recipe equals the ratio of flour to servings in the new recipe.' Help your student see that they're finding equivalent ratios that form a true proportion.
Recipe scaling becomes challenging when students must: scale multiple ingredients while maintaining all their ratios simultaneously, convert between units while scaling (cups to tablespoons), work with non-whole number scale factors (2.5× the recipe), or determine if the new recipe will actually work (some ingredients don't scale proportionally). These problems require multi-step reasoning and careful attention to maintaining proportional relationships across complex scenarios.

Choose a simple family recipe and actually scale it together. Have your student calculate the new ingredient amounts, then prepare the recipe together and compare results. This reinforces that proportions matter practically—a recipe with incorrect proportions may not turn out well. It also shows that their math has real consequences, making abstract ratios and proportions concrete and meaningful.
