We do multiply by the same number (the scaling factor), but proportions help us understand why this works mathematically. A proportion shows that if we change the serving size, all ingredients must change by the same factor to keep the recipe balanced. For example, doubling a recipe means all ingredients must double to maintain the same taste and texture. Using proportions ensures the relationship between ingredients stays constant.
This is a practical cooking problem! Help your child convert decimals and improper fractions to usable measurements. 1.875 cups equals 1 cup + 7/8 cup, or approximately 1 cup + 14 tablespoons. For cooking, rounding to the nearest practical measurement (like 1 7/8 cups) is acceptable. This teaches the real-world application of ratios—mathematical precision matters, but practical cooking also requires judgment.
Unit conversions can happen at two points: before or after scaling. Some students find it easier to convert all measurements to the same unit first (e.g., all to tablespoons), then scale. Others scale first, then convert the final answer. Both methods work as long as students are careful. The key is recognizing that 16 tablespoons = 1 cup, 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon, and similar conversions must be respected to maintain accurate ratios.
Scaling by fractions is genuinely difficult at this grade level. Start with concrete examples: if a recipe calls for 2 cups flour and you're halving it, that's 2 × 1/2 = 1 cup. Use visual aids like fraction circles or bars to show the scaling. Then practice with easier fractions (halving, doubling) before moving to scaling by 1.5 or other non-unit fractions. Emphasize that the scaling factor is always a multiplier, whether it's a whole number or a fraction.
