A ratio compares two quantities (like 3:4), while a proportion is a statement that two ratios are equal (like 3:4 = 6:8). In Grade 7, students need to understand both because ratios help you see relationships between things, and proportions help you solve for missing values. For example, if you know the ratio of flour to sugar is 2:3, you can use a proportion to figure out how much sugar you need if you have 4 cups of flour.
Always pay attention to the order of the words in the problem. If it says 'the ratio of apples to oranges is 5:2,' then apples go first (numerator or first number) and oranges go second. A helpful strategy is to write the labels above or below your numbers—like 5 apples to 2 oranges—so you can see at a glance that you've kept the correct order.
While guess-and-check can work for simple problems, cross-multiplication is faster and more reliable, especially as ratios get more complex. Cross-multiplication (multiplying across diagonals in a proportion) works because of a mathematical property that guarantees your answer is correct every time. Once you master it, you'll be able to solve any proportion confidently without trial and error.
That's perfectly fine! Not all ratios simplify to simpler whole numbers. A ratio like 3:7 is already in simplest form because 3 and 7 share no common factors other than 1. You can still use this ratio in proportions and find equivalent ratios by multiplying both parts by the same whole number (e.g., 3:7 = 6:14 = 9:21). Don't feel like every ratio needs to simplify—just make sure you've checked if it can be reduced.
