At the 8th-grade level, students should simplify ratios to their lowest terms (like reducing 6:9 to 2:3) unless the problem specifically asks for the ratio in a particular form or in a real-world context where the actual numbers matter (like a recipe with 2 cups flour to 1 cup sugar). Check if your worksheet instructions specify this. Simplifying helps students see equivalent ratios more clearly.
Have them always write the words first: 'boys to girls' or 'sugar to flour,' then write the numbers below the words. For example: Boys-to-Girls / 3-to-5. This label-first approach prevents reversal errors. After several problems, most students internalize the pattern from seeing the words consistently written out.
A ratio compares two quantities and can be written as 3:5 or 3/5, but they mean slightly different things. The ratio 3:5 means 'for every 3 of one thing, there are 5 of another.' The fraction 3/5 means '3 parts out of 5 total parts.' Both can be used in proportions, but understanding the difference helps students apply ratios correctly to real situations, especially in word problems about scaling recipes or mixing paints.
Teach them a consistent process: (1) Write the proportion as two equal fractions or ratios, (2) Identify which number is missing, (3) Use cross-multiplication to solve (multiply diagonally across the equal sign and set products equal), and (4) Divide to isolate the unknown. For example, in 2/3 = x/9, cross-multiply to get 2(9) = 3(x), which gives 18 = 3x, so x = 6. Consistency in approach reduces errors.
