Identifying a proportional relationship means recognizing whether two quantities have a constant ratio or scale factor (e.g., recognizing that doubling one quantity always doubles the other). Solving a proportion means using that relationship to find a missing value through cross-multiplication or other methods. At this level, students need to do both: first determine if a relationship is proportional, then use that to solve for unknowns. Advanced worksheets combine both skills.
The most common error is not maintaining corresponding quantities in the same positions. For example, if comparing miles to hours, both ratios must have miles in the numerator and hours in the denominator (or vice versa). Have your student create a 'units map' before setting up any proportion: write out what each position represents (e.g., 'miles on top, hours on bottom'). Then carefully match the given information to this template. This prevents 'flipped' proportions that yield incorrect answers.
When figures are similar, their corresponding sides are proportional—meaning the ratio of any two corresponding sides is equal. Grade 8 students use proportions to find missing side lengths in similar triangles or other shapes. This is one of the most practical applications of proportion skills. If your student struggles with these geometry-based proportion problems, start by identifying which sides correspond to each other, then set up the proportion just as you would for any ratio problem.

Use cross-multiplication as a verification method: multiply the means (inner terms) and extremes (outer terms) to confirm they're equal. Alternatively, simplify both ratios separately and verify they reduce to the same ratio. You can also substitute your answer back into the original problem context and ask, 'Does this make sense?' For example, if you found that a 2-inch drawing represents 10 feet in reality, doubling the drawing dimensions should double the real-world measurement. This contextual check catches errors that pure arithmetic might miss.
Start with proportions that have familiar contexts and whole number answers, then gradually introduce decimals, variables in different positions, and multi-step scenarios. Have your student physically represent proportions (using drawings or scale models) before moving to pure equations. Encourage them to estimate answers using mental math (e.g., 'Is the answer closer to 5 or 50?') before solving algebraically. This builds number sense and makes the transition to abstraction smoother. Also, consistently ask them to explain what the variable represents in context—this keeps the mathematics meaningful.
