A ratio compares two quantities (like 3:5), while a proportion states that two ratios are equal (like 3/5 = 6/10). For Grade 8, this distinction matters because students must recognize when a problem is asking them to find an equivalent ratio (using a scale factor) versus when they need to solve an equation with unknown variables. Understanding this difference helps them choose the correct strategy: scaling or cross-multiplication.
Teach a consistent labeling system. For every proportion, have your student write what the numerator represents and what the denominator represents. For example: '(miles)/(hours) = (miles)/(hours)' or '(cost)/(items) = (cost)/(items)'. This visual organization prevents mixing up quantities and makes it immediately obvious if the proportion is set up correctly before any calculation begins.
Proportions are most useful when you have three known values and need to find a fourth. However, Grade 8 students should also recognize when to use scale factors directly (e.g., multiplying by 2 to double a recipe) or when to calculate unit rates to compare proportional relationships. Advanced problems often require deciding which method is most efficient, so encourage your student to ask, 'Do I need to find one missing value, or do I need to compare multiple quantities?'
Ask your student to explain *why* cross-multiplication works (the property of equivalent fractions) and to solve a proportion in a different way, such as using a scale factor. If they can identify proportional relationships in new contexts, adjust a proportion when one value changes, and explain whether a real-world scenario is proportional or not, they likely have deep understanding rather than just procedural knowledge.

The process is identical: set up the proportion with matching units, cross-multiply, and solve algebraically. The only extra step is careful arithmetic with decimals or fractions. Encourage your student to clear fractions by multiplying both sides by a common denominator before cross-multiplying, or to convert all values to the same form (all decimals or all fractions) before starting. This reduces computational errors on advanced problems.
