Teach them that independent clauses can 'stand alone' as complete thoughts, while dependent clauses 'depend' on another clause to make sense. Have them try reading each clause by itself - if it sounds incomplete or leaves them hanging, it's dependent.
Use the substitution test: if you can replace the '-ing' word with 'it' or 'something' and the sentence still makes sense, it's a gerund (noun). If replacing it makes the sentence nonsensical, it's likely a participle (adjective).
Students often get confused by words that come between the subject and verb. Teach them to identify and mentally cross out prepositional phrases and other modifiers to find the true subject, then match the verb to that subject only.
Create clear timelines showing when actions happened. Present perfect (has/have + past participle) connects past to present, past perfect (had + past participle) shows what happened first in the past, and future perfect (will have + past participle) shows what will be completed by a future time.
These concepts are appropriate for advanced fifth graders when introduced gradually. Focus on recognition first (finding them in sentences) before moving to usage. Many students can identify 'to + verb' infinitives and '-ing'/'-ed' participles even if they can't define them perfectly.
