Practice identifying nouns (person, place, thing) and verbs (action words) in simple sentences

Explain that nouns are the actual person, place, or thing, while describing words tell us more about the noun. Point to a big dog and say 'dog' is the noun (the thing), but 'big' just describes the dog. Use the test: 'Can I point to happy?' vs 'Can I point to the dog?'
At this level, focus on simple, kid-friendly definitions: nouns are 'naming words' for people, places, and things; verbs are 'action words' or 'doing words.' The formal grammatical definitions can come later - understanding the concept through examples is most important now.
For first grade, focus on how the word is used in each specific sentence. In 'I like to run,' run tells what you do (verb). In 'We went for a run,' run is the thing you went for (noun). Don't worry about explaining this complexity yet - just focus on the word's job in that particular sentence.
This is normal for first graders! Try a two-step approach: first, hunt only for nouns and mark them, then go back through the sentence looking only for verbs. This prevents overwhelm and helps them focus on one part of speech at a time.
