Break the 15 vocabulary words into smaller groups of 3-4 words. Work on one group completely before moving to the next. This prevents cognitive overload and allows your child to feel successful with each small set before tackling more words.
Start by explaining that context clues are like being a detective - other words in the sentence give hints about the mystery word's meaning. Practice with simple examples from their daily life, like 'The puppy was so tiny it could fit in my hand' and ask what 'tiny' might mean based on the clues.
Encourage them to use the 'read twice' strategy - read each sentence once for overall understanding, then read it again slowly while looking for specific clues. You can also have them explain their thinking out loud before choosing an answer.
Grade 3 vocabulary should include words your child might encounter in their everyday reading but may not use in conversation yet. If your child can decode (sound out) most words but needs help with meanings, the level is just right for building vocabulary skills.

For context clue practice, encourage your child to make their best guess first using only the sentence clues, then check their answer with a dictionary afterward. This builds their context clue skills while still providing the security of confirming correct meanings.
