Context clues help students become independent learners who can figure out new words they encounter in reading without stopping to look them up. This skill is essential for G6 students because they'll encounter increasingly difficult texts where they need to keep reading fluently while understanding meaning. It also helps words stick in memory longer because students engage actively with them rather than passively memorizing.
Ask them to point to the exact words in the sentence that gave them a clue. If they can't find evidence, have them re-read slowly and look for words related to the mystery word, opposites, examples, or explanations. Making them justify their answer with proof from the text teaches rigor and prevents random guessing.
Start with independent problem-solving to strengthen their detective skills. If they're stuck after genuinely trying, a dictionary is fine—but frame it as checking their detective work, not as the first step. The goal is building confidence in their ability to decode meaning, which is the real vocabulary superpower at this age.
True vocabulary learning happens when students can use words in their own speaking and writing days later. After completing the worksheet, casually listen for whether they use any of these 10 words in conversation or in other writing assignments. If they can spontaneously use a word weeks later, that's genuine learning. If they forget it immediately, they may have memorized rather than truly learned.

Challenge them to explain *why* each answer is correct using complete sentences that reference context clues. Better yet, have them create their own 'Word Detective' problems for you to solve, using new vocabulary words they find in their reading. This reversal deepens their understanding and keeps advanced learners engaged.
