Regrouping works differently conceptually in addition versus subtraction. Some G4 students haven't yet connected these as inverse processes. Practice problems that explicitly show both operations with the same numbers can help them see the relationship. Additionally, ensure your child can quickly recall addition facts and understand that 12 ones genuinely equals 1 ten and 2 ones by using place value manipulatives.
Give your child a few single-digit addition facts to solve quickly (like 7+8, 6+5) before attempting the multi-digit problems. If those are automatic and accurate, the issue is likely the multi-digit algorithm or regrouping. If single-digit facts are slow or incorrect, build fluency with those first using flashcards or games before advancing to hard vertical addition. Both skills are necessary for success with these problems.
Encourage showing all work on or directly next to the vertical problem on the worksheet. This includes writing the carried digits clearly above the next column. Scratch paper for estimation is fine, but the addition steps should be visible so you can identify where errors occur. A clear, organized workspace (carrying digits written neatly, digits aligned in columns) actually helps students catch their own mistakes and builds good mathematical habits.

Speed without accuracy is not a success at this level. Have your child focus on checking their work rather than moving on to new problems. Use strategies like re-solving problems in a different color pen to compare answers, or having them verify using a calculator after they finish to identify which problems need reworking. Once they can solve these 15 problems with at least 90% accuracy, speed will naturally follow with continued practice.
