This is very common at grade 5 level. Help them create memory tricks: 'Area = Amount of space' and 'Perimeter = Path around.' Practice with hands-on activities like measuring actual rectangles around your home and asking whether you'd need area or perimeter for different purposes.
Use the phrase 'length times width gives the space inside.' Have them draw rectangles on graph paper and physically count squares to see why multiplying works. Start with small numbers like 3×4 where they can count 12 squares to verify.
Triangle perimeter is simply adding all three sides, but students often forget the third side. Have them trace each side with their finger while saying the measurement out loud, then add all three numbers. Unlike area, triangle perimeter doesn't need a special formula - just addition.
Teach your child to ask: 'Am I covering something (area) or going around something (perimeter)?' For example, buying carpet = area, installing a fence = perimeter. Have them underline key phrases in word problems that give clues about which calculation to use.
This medium-difficulty worksheet focuses on whole number measurements, which is appropriate for grade 5. Decimals in area and perimeter are typically introduced in grade 6. If your child masters whole numbers easily, you can challenge them with simple decimals like 2.5 × 4.
