The formula A = πr² comes from how circles are mathematically defined around their center point. The radius is the distance from center to edge, and the area grows based on that radius squared. The diameter is twice the radius, so using diameter would give an answer 4 times too large. A helpful memory trick: 'Area needs the radius, circumference can use diameter'—since C = πd works, but area must use A = πr².
Imagine a rectangular sheet of paper with a circular hole punched through it. The actual remaining material's area equals the rectangle's full area minus the hole's area. We subtract because we're removing that circular region from the total. A common student error is adding all shapes—remind them that 'cut out' or 'removed' always means subtraction in area problems.
This requires finding arc length, not full circumference. If a semicircle forms part of the perimeter, use half the circumference: (1/2) × 2πr = πr. If a quarter-circle is the boundary, use (1/4) × 2πr = (πr/2). Always identify what fraction of the full circle actually forms the outer edge, then calculate that fraction of the full circumference. Don't forget to add the straight-line segments too!
For Grade 6, typically the worksheet will specify whether to use π ≈ 3.14 or leave the answer in terms of π. If not specified, using π ≈ 3.14 is the standard practice at this level to get a numerical answer. However, some problems may ask for exact answers with π symbol. Check the worksheet instructions for each problem—consistency in format matters for grading.

Teach students to look for the 'simplest' shapes they already know formulas for: rectangles, triangles, circles, and semicircles. Have them ask: 'Can I break this into these basic shapes?' Not every decomposition is obvious—sometimes rotating or repositioning shapes mentally helps. Practice problems where you draw decomposition lines together, then gradually reduce support as they build confidence recognizing patterns.
