Practice calculating area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles, circles, and composite shapes with real-world applications

This is very common in Grade 6! Area measures the space inside (like carpet needed for a room) while perimeter measures the distance around the edge (like fence needed around a yard). Use real-world analogies and have them physically trace perimeters and shade areas to reinforce the difference.
While memorization helps with fluency, focus first on understanding what each formula means. For Grade 6, students should know rectangle/square formulas well, understand triangle area as 'half of a rectangle,' and be comfortable using π ≈ 3.14 for circles with a reference sheet if needed.
Teach them to 'break it apart' - use colored pencils to outline different sections (rectangles, triangles, etc.) within the composite shape. Calculate each piece separately, then add the areas together. For perimeter, only count the outer edges, not the internal division lines.
Help them visualize that a triangle is exactly half of a rectangle. Draw a rectangle, then draw a diagonal line - each triangle is half the rectangle's area. The base and height must be perpendicular (form a 90° angle), which trips up many sixth graders when triangles are rotated.
Real-world applications help students see why area and perimeter matter! Start by having them identify what the problem is asking (area or perimeter?), what shape is involved, and what measurements are given. The math is the same - it's just presented in a story context that makes it more meaningful.
