This is very common in Grade 1! Try the 'continue the chant' method - have them say the pattern aloud several times, then keep the rhythm going to naturally arrive at the next element. For example: 'red, blue, red, blue, red, blue, red... what comes next in our chant?'
At this level, most children work best with one attribute at a time initially. Start with simple color patterns, then shape patterns, and finally combine both. Don't worry if they need to focus on just one element - this is developmentally appropriate for Grade 1.
Look for consistent success with ABAB patterns and confidence in explaining why their answers are correct. If they can easily complete 2-element patterns and start predicting multiple elements ahead, they may be ready for ABC or ABB patterns.
