Yes, this is completely normal! Backwards counting is much more challenging because children can't rely on the familiar forward counting sequence they've memorized. Practice with songs, number lines, and countdown games to build this skill gradually.
Your child should be able to count forward to at least 30 confidently and recognize number patterns. Start with counting by 10s first (easiest), then 5s, and finally 2s. If they can count to 50 and understand that numbers have patterns, they're ready for skip counting.
Break it down into smaller groups! Teach them to circle or group objects into sets of 5 or 10 first, then count by groups. You can also use different colored crayons to mark every 5th or 10th object to make counting easier to track.
While challenging, counting backwards from 20 is appropriate for advanced kindergarteners, especially later in the school year. Some children may only master backwards counting from 10, and that's perfectly fine. Adjust expectations based on your individual child's development.
Teach them to physically move or mark each object as they count it. They can use their finger to push objects aside, put a small dot on each item, or cross out pictures as they count. This prevents double-counting and helps maintain their place in larger sets.
