When multiplying decimals, we count the total number of decimal places in both factors and place the decimal point that many places from the right in the product. This preserves the value of our answer because we're accounting for the fractional parts we're multiplying.
When dividing a decimal by a whole number, the decimal point in the quotient goes directly above the decimal point in the dividend. This keeps the decimal in the correct place value position based on what we're dividing.
Not effectively. Understanding place value is essential because it helps you know why the decimal point goes where it does and prevents careless errors. Procedures without understanding lead to mistakes.
Use real-world contexts like cooking measurements, shopping prices, or sports statistics. Have your child multiply or divide decimals in these authentic situations, then check answers together using a calculator.
Return to visual representations and place value charts to rebuild understanding before practicing the algorithm again. Have them verbalize why the decimal goes in a specific location, as this strengthens conceptual knowledge.
