Yes, this is very common. While multiplication and division are inverse operations, many young students need explicit instruction connecting the two. Try using number families: show how 3 × 4 = 12, 4 × 3 = 12, 12 ÷ 3 = 4, and 12 ÷ 4 = 3 all belong together. This visual relationship helps students transfer multiplication knowledge to division.
A student is ready for challenging division when they can: (1) reliably solve basic division facts (up to 5 ÷ 5) with manipulatives, (2) explain what the division symbol means using objects or pictures, and (3) see the connection between multiplication and division. If your student struggles with these foundations, practice those first before tackling this worksheet.
Resist solving it for them. Instead, guide with questions: 'What does the first number tell us?' 'How many groups do we need to make?' 'Can you draw or use blocks to show this?' If they're still stuck after drawing, ask them a related multiplication question (e.g., 'If we have 3 groups of 5, how many total?') to rebuild the connection to division.
At Grade 2, the focus should be on understanding division concepts first, not memorization. However, as they practice these harder problems, fluency with basic facts (÷ 2 through ÷ 5) will naturally develop. Use repeated exposure and strategy talk rather than flashcards or timed drills, which can create anxiety around division at this crucial developmental stage.
