Division requires students to think about multiplication backwards, which is a different cognitive task. Your student must recognize 'What times this number equals that total?' rather than 'This times that equals what?' Explicitly teach the inverse relationship by solving a multiplication problem first, then flipping it to division. For example: 5 × 4 = 20, so 20 ÷ 5 = 4. With repeated practice connecting these two operations, division becomes much more accessible.
At the G3 easy level, the goal is to develop both. Initially, encourage strategic thinking like skip-counting, using manipulatives, or relating to known multiplication facts. As students solve more problems on worksheets like this one, they naturally begin to build automaticity with frequently-used facts (÷ 2, ÷ 3, ÷ 5, ÷ 10). Memorization without strategy leads to forgotten facts; strategy without practice doesn't build fluency. This worksheet supports both by repeated exposure within a focused context.
Don't just mark it wrong. Instead, ask your student to show their thinking using drawings, manipulatives, or by explaining aloud. Often you'll discover whether the error is a careless mistake, a misunderstanding of division, or a gap in the related multiplication facts. For example, if they say 12 ÷ 3 = 5, ask 'Can you draw 3 groups and put items in them until you reach 12?' or 'What times 3 equals 12?' This diagnostic approach tells you exactly what reteaching is needed.
With guidance and discussion, expect 15-20 minutes for a student new to these facts, or 8-12 minutes for a student building fluency. Speed isn't the goal at the 'easy' difficulty level—understanding and accuracy are. If your student is rushing, slow the pace down and focus on fewer problems solved thoughtfully rather than all 15 problems solved quickly with errors.

Use the facts your student found most challenging for continued practice. Create quick 2-3 minute daily drills with just those difficult facts using flashcards, a whiteboard, or verbal problems. You might also create simple word problems using those facts: 'If you have 15 apples and want to share equally among 5 friends, how many does each friend get?' (15 ÷ 5). This maintains fluency while showing division's real-world application.
