Many students know multiplication facts but don't immediately recognize that division is the inverse operation. Help them make this connection explicitly: show them that 3 × 5 = 15 and 15 ÷ 3 = 5 are related. Use the multiplication fact to solve the division problem. This takes practice, but it clicks quickly once students see the pattern. Use a multiplication table as a reference tool while working through these problems.
This worksheet focuses on division without remainders (clean division), which is the right starting point for Grade 3. For now, choose only problems where the division works out evenly. Once your student masters these 15 problems fluently, you can introduce remainders by using problems like 10 ÷ 3 and asking 'How many are left over?' Rather than introducing remainders too early, solidify the foundational concept with problems that divide evenly.
The gradual release approach works best: start with objects, move to drawings, then to mental math with your help, and finally to independent mental math. After using counters for problems, say 'Let's try that without the counters—can you picture the 12 dots in your head?' Use anchor facts like ÷1 (always stays the same), ÷2 (half the number), and ÷5 (use skip counting) to build fluency. Celebrate progress rather than rushing the transition.
Students typically find these easiest: dividing by 1 (the answer is always the number itself), dividing by 2 (it's the same as finding half), and dividing by 5 (they can use skip counting by 5s). After mastering these, move to dividing by 3, 4, and then 6-9. Organizing the worksheet this way—easier facts first—builds confidence and momentum. Focus on these easier divisions in the first few problems of your practice session.
