Division is the inverse of multiplication and is essential for understanding equal groups, sharing, and measurement—real-world concepts your child encounters daily. Learning division now builds foundational skills for multi-digit division, fractions, and algebra. Grade 4 is the standard year for introducing basic division facts.
Counting is a natural strategy, but it's slow and error-prone for larger numbers. Gently redirect by saying, 'Let's think about multiplication instead. What times 5 gives us 30?' Model this repeatedly, and gradually reduce finger-counting by setting a time limit or covering their hands playfully. Consistent practice with multiplication facts will make fact-based division feel faster and easier.
Use real, relatable scenarios: 'If you have 12 cookies and want to share them equally with 3 friends, how many does each person get?' Let them physically divide objects (cookies, toys, blocks) into groups. This concrete experience is far more powerful than abstract symbols, especially for students who are visual or kinesthetic learners.
That's perfectly fine! In fact, it's encouraged. Using the multiplication relationship (e.g., 'I know 4 × 6 = 24, so 24 ÷ 6 = 4') shows strong mathematical thinking. However, eventually they should also be able to recognize the division symbol and respond directly without always 'converting' to multiplication first. Balance both approaches during practice.

Your child should be able to fluently recall multiplication facts for 2s through 10s (ideally within 3 seconds). If they still need to count or use fingers to answer multiplication facts, spend another week or two on fact fluency before starting division. This worksheet assumes solid multiplication foundations, so don't skip that step.
