A remainder is the amount left over after you've divided as evenly as possible. For example, if you have 17 cookies to share equally among 5 friends, each friend gets 3 cookies and there's 2 left over—that 2 is the remainder. We learn about remainders because real-world division isn't always perfectly even. Understanding remainders helps us interpret real situations: sometimes you ignore the remainder, sometimes you round up (like if you need enough containers), and sometimes the remainder matters as a fraction.
Use the check method: multiply your quotient by the divisor, then add the remainder. This should equal your original number. For example: 23 ÷ 5 = 4 R3, so check: (4 × 5) + 3 = 20 + 3 = 23. ✓ Also remember: your remainder MUST be smaller than your divisor. If it's not, your quotient digit was too small and you need to try a larger digit.
Division with remainders requires stronger multi-digit subtraction skills, which many Grade 4 students are still developing. Additionally, students must understand what to do with the remainder—it's an abstract concept that doesn't have a simple answer like 'the answer is 6.' Students also sometimes forget that the remainder is part of checking their work, making it harder to catch their own errors.
This depends on your curriculum. Most Grade 4 programs focus on writing remainders as whole numbers (like 'R2'). Some advanced students or curricula may introduce writing remainders as fractions (like 2/5), but this is typically a Grade 5 skill. Stick with whole number remainders for this worksheet and focus on understanding what remainders mean in context.

This is extremely common! Have your student slow down and do the subtraction problem separately, checking it carefully before bringing down the next digit. Some students benefit from rewriting the subtraction vertically on scrap paper. You might also practice subtraction facts and regrouping in isolation before combining them with division. Consider using graph paper so each digit has its own box, preventing alignment errors.
