Division requires students to think 'backwards' from multiplication, which is cognitively more challenging. Instead of 'What is 6 × 4?', they must think 'What number times 6 equals 24?' Help by always connecting new division problems to the multiplication facts your child already knows. Say, 'You know 6 × 4 = 24, so 24 ÷ 6 = 4.' Use the language 'divided into' or 'groups of' to make the meaning concrete: '24 divided into 6 groups' or '24 in groups of 6.'
A remainder is the amount left over when a number can't be divided evenly. For example, 25 ÷ 4 = 6 R1 means 4 goes into 25 six times with 1 left over. In Grade 4, students should write remainders as 'R' followed by the number in all their answers. In real-world contexts, the remainder's meaning depends on the situation: if sharing 25 cookies among 4 friends, each gets 6 with 1 cookie left. If 25 people need transportation in cars that hold 4, you need 7 cars (rounding up because the remainder means you need another car).
Your student should be ready if they can: (1) identify and quickly recall most single-digit multiplication facts (6 × 7, 8 × 9, etc.), (2) understand that division is the opposite of multiplication, and (3) have been introduced to the concept of division through sharing or grouping activities. If your child is still memorizing multiplication facts, spend more time on those before diving into division problem-solving. Division fluency builds naturally once multiplication is secure.
Grade 4 is when formal long division is introduced, but students should be encouraged to use multiple strategies. Some effective approaches include: repeated subtraction (subtracting groups until you reach zero), using arrays or drawings, or using known multiplication facts. Long division is the most efficient for larger numbers, but understanding WHY it works is more important than speed at this level. Let your child use the strategy that makes sense to them, then teach long division as one organized way to record their thinking.

Connect division to real-life: dividing snacks among siblings, sharing toys into bags, or figuring out how many equal teams you can make from a group. Play games like 'Division War' (similar to multiplication war, using division facts), or have your child create their own division story problems based on scenarios they care about. Celebrate effort and strategy use rather than speed. Saying 'I like how you checked your answer using multiplication!' reinforces mathematical thinking over performance.
